Chapter 10

Nikki didn’t work. At least she didn’t punch anybody’s time clock. I didn’t know for sure how she earned enough money to pay her bills, but watching the constant parade of men that she led into her bedroom, I got an idea of where some of her funds came from.

Most nights, Nikki didn’t even come home. But that didn’t bother me at all. Often, she would stumble in pissy drunk, just managing to beat the sunrise by a few minutes. I would look up at her from my spot on the futon, my child slumbering next to my breast, and she would flip her wrist at me dismissively before disappearing into her room where she wouldn’t emerge until the late afternoon hours.

I didn’t love Nikki but I didn’t hate her either. Hating her would have taken too much of my energy—energy that I could devote to my child that needed me, especially since I was all he had. I honestly didn’t know how I felt about Nikki. But our living arrangements didn’t help our relationship at all. When Nikki was sober, the extent of our conversation was always around if I had found a job so I could give her money or when I planned to move out because she wanted her privacy back.

I became anxious as my deadline approached. No one wanted to hire a girl with a small child, no dependable daycare or transportation, and no high school diploma. My future looked bleak at best. I’d been turned down at Pizza Hut, Burger King, Wal-Mart, and even the nearby dollar stores and pawnshops. Nobody wanted me. Applying for Section 8 housing was all I’d accomplished, so hopefully, I could get the hell out of Nikki’s apartment as quickly as possible.

On the morning of exactly one week before my deadline, when the sun had just begun to peak over the horizon, spilling a bright glow throughout the apartment, Nikki strutted in wearing a skin-tight, red dress that hugged her body in all the wrong places. Her ankle shifted to the side in the cheap heels she wore and she kicked them off angrily, launching them into the kitchen where they would likely remain until I picked them up.

She looked at me and grunted, then made her way to the kitchen, pulling at the hem of her dress. She opened the refrigerator and stared for a moment before slamming it shut. Marcus stirred next to me but didn’t wake up.

“Why the hell is my refrigerator empty?” Nikki yelled.

“Shh,” I held my finger to my lips and got up from the bed. “Don’t wake up Marcus.”

Dramatically, Nikki stepped back and placed her hand on her chest as her eyes widened. “Don’t wake up Marcus!” she exclaimed, then slapped her hand on her thigh. “Well, I’ll be damned. Maybe I need to talk to that lil’ nigga about my gotdamn groceries since he runnin’ shit. Got you tellin’ me that I can’t talk in my own damn house. Like his lil’ ass gotta get up and go to work this mornin’.
